What is Red Hat Gluster?
Gluster is a distributed scale out filesystem that allows rapid provisioning of additional storage based on your storage consumption needs. It incorporates automatic failover as a primary feature. All of this is accomplished without a centralised metadata server.

We heard you! You need not call up your storage administrator if you are a Windows user and need to browse through the previous version of any file/folder. Red Hat Gluster Storage is now integrated with Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) of Microsoft Windows. Red Hat Gluster Storage supports the viewing and accessing of snapshots.
The file-based auto tiering feature of Red Hat Gluster Storage 3.1.2, initially available only in tech preview and supported on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 based on Red Hat Gluster Storage, places frequently accessed or “hot” data on fast media (e.g., flash, SSDs) and seldom-accessed or “cold” data on higher capacity yet slower-spinning media (see following figure).
This release of Red Hat Gluster Storage supports writable snapshots–clones of snapshotted volumes with read/write permissions. Until today, only thin, LVM-based, read-only snapshots were available in the product. The writable clones, which are space efficient and instantly created, share the backend LVM store with their parent snapshots (see following figure).
As you will note, the power of the scale-out model is that both capacity and performance can scale linearly to meet requirements. It is not necessary to know what performance levels will be needed 2-3 years out. Instead, configurations can be easily adjusted as need demands.
Have more network adapters? Get better SMB performance! SMB Multichannel is a feature of SMB 3.0 protocol that increases the network performance and availability of Red Hat Gluster Storage servers. SMB Multichannel allows use of multiple network connections simultaneously and provides increased throughput along with network fault tolerance. SMB Multichannel is provided as a technical preview feature with Red Hat Gluster Storage 3.1.3, and we intend to fully support it soon.
Periodic scheduling of geo-replication allows administrators to synchronize data between clusters during non-peak hours. We have detailed performance and sizing guides available later this year, with prescriptive guidance to tweak the right price/performance mix for your workloads.
The bit rot detection functionality in Red Hat Gluster Storage periodically scans all data bricks in the product, compares checksums, and identifies and sometimes proactively fixes corrupted files. This release augments this feature so that you can identify corrupted files easily and take any necessary corrective action.
SMB shares back-ended by Red Hat Gluster Storage now perform better for streaming workloads. With this release, asynchronous IO from Samba to Gluster is supported and the relevant option is enabled by default in smb.conf. We have seen up to 100% performance increase from the previous release in our performance labs!
